Contending with Contempt

"Our soul is exceedingly filled... with the contempt of the proud" (Psalm 123:4).  "Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death... He that winneth souls is wise" (Proverbs 11:4,30).  "The proud men... obeyed not the voice of the LORD" (Jeremiah 43:2-7). "They... shall give account to Him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead" (1 Peter 4:4,5).

There is contention in this life
From which we shall not be exempt:
Be not surprised that there is strife
As sinners scorn us with contempt.

Be sure of this:  there is a day
In which the wrath of God shall come.
By every means, then, while we may,
Let us be wise in saving some!

Though proud men yet refuse to hear
The voice of Jesus Christ, our Savior,
The day of wrath is drawing near,
And riches shall not buy His favor.

O Lord, we know You'll come again,
And all shall give account at last.
Contending with contempt shall then
Seem like a moment which has passed.
