Couriers of Christ

“And Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters… So the posts went with the letters… according to the commandment of the king, saying… Turn again unto the LORD God… for the LORD your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn away His face from you, if ye return unto Him.  So the posts passed from city to city… but they laughed them to scorn, and mocked them.  Nevertheless diverse… humbled themselves, and came” (2 Chronicles 30:1-11).  “I speak of the things which I have made touching the King… of truth and meekness and righteousness” (Psalm 45:1-4).  “The Lord appointed… two and two before His face into every city and place, whither He Himself would come.  Therefore said He unto them… Go your ways… and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you” (Luke 10:1-9).

In ancient Judah there were kings
Whose hearts by God were greatly stirred
To seek His face and speak of things
Which God had promised in His Word.

King Hezekiah rightly saw
That God extended mercy then,
And thus with letters he would draw
The hearts of many wayward men.

And so his posts went place to place
Proclaiming at the king’s command
That it was time to seek God’s face,
Whose tender mercies were at hand.

His couriers were mocked and scorned,
As are God’s messengers today,
Yet now, as then, some will be warned
And turn to God while still they may.

As couriers of Christ we speak
Of things that touch our King and Savior,
Declaring that it’s time to seek
And trust the Lord to find His favor.

In truth and meekness Jesus came
To give to us His righteousness.
Apart from Him there is no name
By which the Lord our God will bless.

What gracious words from Christ are poured!
What mercies now our Lord extends!
As couriers of Christ our Lord
We take the Gospel where He sends.

It is by grace we’re taught to fear
And prompted then to run and hide.
Our Hiding Place in Christ is near,
And those who come are justified.

We thank You, Lord, that You now use
Your people as ambassadors
And couriers of Your Good News,
So all the glory may be Yours!
