Exploring the Excellence

“Train up a child in the way he should go… Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge, that I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?” (Proverbs 22:6,20,21).  “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given… and His name shall be called… The Mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6).  “And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.  And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the Babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger” (Luke 2:10-12).

Explore the excellence of Christ,
And thank Him for His words as well:
Their evidences have sufficed
To turn convicted souls from hell.

The Lord gave perfect prophecy
Which surely ought to be explored
That we may know the certainty
Of things this world has ignored.

These written things now undergird
The reason that we clearly know
That God has given us His Word
Which we should be prepared to show.

Though some may question why we need
To thus defend the words of truth,
Consider this:  We’re called to lead
And train with certainty our youth.

The Lord assigns to us the task
Of studying the evidence
That we may answer those who ask
The reason for our confidence.

For unto us a Child was born
Who shivered in a lowly manger.
Indifferent souls today may scorn,
Yet we persuade them of their danger.

The birth of Christ at Bethlehem,
The price for which our Lord was sold,
His cross outside Jerusalem,
And resurrection were foretold.

These prophecies that we explore
Now strip excuses all away,
And there is more, yes, so much more
In God’s Word to convince today.

O Lord, we thank You that You gave
Yourself to take away our sin
And that Your Gospel still can save
The souls You call us now to win.
