Helper of the Helpless

“O our God… we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon Thee… Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed… for the battle is not yours, but God’s” (2 Chronicles 20:12-15),  “LORD, who is like unto Thee, which deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him?” (Psalm 35:10).  “Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?” (Proverbs 20:9).  “They said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulcher?  And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great” (Mark 16:3,4).

The Helper of the helpless stands
Against this multitude arrayed
And comforts us with His commands
To neither fear nor be dismayed.

We see how helpless that we are
In terms of our eternity:
Our sinfulness had thrust us far
From God by our iniquity.

We hear this multitude of sins
Accuse us with a lengthy scroll,
And even as the list begins,
We see how helpless is our soul.

There’s nothing we can do to cure
Our souls now plagued with sin’s disease,
For who can say that they are pure
From sin that God so clearly sees?

As death approaches we may say,
Like those who arriving at Christ’s tomb,
“Now who shall roll the stone away?”
And who shall save us from our doom?

The answer comes to those who seek
And find our Lord victorious!
The stone is moved, though we are weak,
And Christ has conquered death for us!

O Lord, we thank You for the love
And for the help that You extended
By leaving heaven’s throne above
To save the souls You have befriended.

O Helper in our helplessness,
Receive our praise and adoration
For giving us Your righteousness
And purging sin by Your salvation!
