Treacherous Treasures

"Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: Thy blessing is upon Thy people" (Psalm 3:8).  "Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death... The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and He addeth no sorrow with it" (Proverbs 10:2,22).  "The merchants of the earth are waxed rich... Be not partakers of her sins... that ye receive not of her plagues" (Revelation 18:3,4).

Salvation came by Christ our Lord;
There surely was no other way
To buy what we could not afford
With fleeting treasures that decay.

The treasures of this earth we gain
Shall not from death deliver us.
Apart from Christ, all hope is vain
And trust in wealth is treacherous.

The blessing of our Lord and Savior
Shall make us rich by His salvation.
He adds no sorrow with His favor
Which rescues us from condemnation.

How treacherous the treasures are,
O Lord, deceiving those on earth!
When distance still from You is far,
What profit, then, are riches worth?
