Delightful Duty

"So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.... Let Thy work appear unto thy servants, and Thy glory unto their children. And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish the work of our hands upon us" (Psalm 90:12,16,17). "Train up a child in the way he should go.... Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge, that I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth?" (Proverbs 22:6,20).

We train our children in the ways
Of God and His eternal beauty,
So they may serve Him all their days
With all their heart's delightful duty.

Now this is not a time for slumber
As precious days are slipping by,
But rather, it is time to number
And use the time we may apply!

Has not our Lord, the King of kings,
Provided in His written Truth
The certainty of future things
To answer and equip our youth?

Delightful duty! What a task!
Lord, teach us how train them well
And answer them when they shall ask
Of Christ who rescues us from hell!
