Solace of our Souls

"All these things are against me.... then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave" (Genesis 42:36,38). "Say unto my soul, I am thy Salvation.... and my soul shall be joyful in the LORD: it shall rejoice in His salvation" (Psalm 35:3,9). "The heart knoweth his own bitterness, and a stranger doth not intermeddle with his joy" (Proverbs 14:10). "Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you" (James 4:8).

In seasons when bitterness comes to our hearts
And all of our prospects seem dim,
The solace that Jesus our Lord then imparts
Is found as we draw near to Him.

We find not our solace in strangers who come,
Or even the closest of friends.
In Christ we discover where true peace is from:
On Him all our welfare depends.

We dare not find solace in temporal things
Which flee just as fast as they came,
For riches, we know, fly away as with wings,
And temporal joys are the same.

Our comfort is found in the words of our Lord,
Though in a small voice He may whisper:
"I am your Salvation." Ah! This will afford
A sweetness though all else is bitter!

O Lord, we rejoice in so great a salvation
That robs even death of its fear!
We're finding our solace in Your exhortation
To come as Your love draws us near.
