Purchased Possession

"And Abraham weighed to Ephron (lit., him of dust) the silver, which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth.... and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders round about, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession" (Genesis 23:16-18). "The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: Thou maintainest my lot. The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea I have a goodly heritage" (Psalm 16:5,6). "The great God and our Savior Jesus Christ... gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works" (Titus 2:13,14).

By Abraham the price was paid
To make his heritage secure.
With silver of redemption weighed,
His borders thereby were made sure.

Though Ephron was a man of dust
With all those in his audience,
That price gave Abraham a trust:
That place was his forever hence.

Then how much more has God assured
That our inheritance is bought
Since He, with precious blood, secured
The lines of our eternal lot!

How pleasantly the lines are drawn,
O Lord, for our inheritance!
Our home is heaven! Sins are gone!
Redemption is our confidence!

Lord, thank You that You weighed the price
That satisfied redemption's cost;
You paid it by Your sacrifice,
Redeeming us who once were lost!
