Reasoning with Rage

"Why do the heathen rage and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against His anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder and cast away their cords from us" (Psalm 2:1-3). "O man, who art thou that repliest against God?" (Romans 9:20).

Why do nations rage today?
What are they thinking of,
Who cast the cords of God away
And spurn His wondrous love?

To rage against the living God
Is so completely vain
With reasoning that is so flawed,
It surely is insane!

For who are you, O little man,
In your imagination,
That you reply with fisted hand
To God with indignation?

The God who made each blazing star
Extends His cords of grace:
Who, then, do you think you are
To fling them in His face?

Now stop and think! Eternity
Shall soon engulf your soul,
And neither rage nor apathy
Shall make God's judgment null.

Alas, in spite of evidence
Inviting honest reason,
The fool replies with insolence
And perishes in season.

We thank You, Lord, for love beyond
Our human comprehension
That urges sinners to respond,
In spite of their contention.
