Pride and Preparation

“The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts… LORD, Thou hast heard the desire of the humble: Thou wilt prepare their heart, Thou wilt cause Thine ear to hear” (Psalm 10:4,13).

Our God is searching everyday
For hearts with true humility.
It’s these that He’ll prepare to pray,
And He will hear attentively.

The greatest problem that exists
That severs man from saving grace
Is wicked pride, which God resists,
In those who will not seek His face.

The Lord examines every heart,
And He delights in humbleness.
This is where the prayer must start
With the desire He will bless.

Our pride is just one element
Of sin demanding condemnation.
Yet by it hearts will not repent,
Depriving them of God’s salvation.

O Lord, we see the pressing need
For grace in all its sweet perfection,
Yet also that we may be freed
From sinful pride and its deception.

We stand amazed, O Lord, at You,
That in humility You died
For rebels You would yet pursue,
Reproving them of sinful pride.

O Lord, You found us in our sin,
And yet You did not turn away:
You turned our hearts from pride within
And saved our souls!  O happy day!
