Vanities and Victories

"Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so He giveth His beloved sleep. Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb is His reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man, so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but shall speak with the enemies in the gate" (Psalm 127:1-5).

We vainly strive for anything
That's done without the Lord;
Our working, watching, worrying
Are wasted efforts poured.

In contrast to these things so vain,
What victories are heard
In homes where godly parents train
Their children by God's Word!

As arrows in the archer's bow
Whose aim is strong and sure,
When it is time to let them go,
Their impact shall endure.

How sweet the triumph and reward
Of seeing children raised
With grace and power for the Lord
That God may thus be praised!
