Blindness of Blasphemy

“Thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling” (Psalm 116:8). “The chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; Himself he cannot save” (Mark 15:31).

We see our Lord fulfill His calling,
Delivering our souls from death,
Our eyes from tears, and feet from falling;
He fought until His final breath!

We hear the taunt those mockers gave,
That “He saved others,” scorning Christ,
And yet “Himself He cannot save,”
When Christ our Lord was sacrificed.

They did not know that they were right!
They only meant to mock His name.
They did not know He came to fight
Upon the cross to bear our shame.

O Lord, You heard the blasphemy;
Your heart was broken, yet You fought!
You could have stopped it instantly,
And yet for our sakes You would not.

We thank You, Lord, though we were blind
To sin’s eternal consequence,
You gave us sight to flee and find
In You our Refuge and Defense!
