Light Lent

"No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed, but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.... Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought Him that he might be with Him: but Jesus sent him away, saying, Return to thine own house, and show how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him" (Luke 8:16, 38,39).

God has lent to us His light;
What then shall we do with it?
As a candle shining bright,
Let your household see it lit!

In the circle of your friends,
In the shadows where you are,
In each place the Savior sends,
Shine in darkness like a star.

Tell the things that God has done;
Publish them throughout the city.
Shine the light of God the Son,
Pray for souls with heaven's pity.

Lord, You lent to us Your flame
To shine the Gospel in this place.
So may we exalt Your name
And show Your work of truth and grace!
