Parable Portraits

"Again the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it" (Matthew 13:44-46).

The parable portraits our Savior displayed,
As treasures so fervently sought,
Reveal the price He was willing to trade,
That souls by His life might be bought.

How great is the mystery that Christ here revealed
To show us how much we are worth:
Like treasure He found that was hid in a field
Are souls He redeems in the earth!

We see this again in the pearl so prized,
The merchant who bought it would sell
All things that he had, which thus dramatized
The Lord who redeemed us from hell.

O Lord, we give thanks for such marvelous love,
Assigning such worth to our soul,
That You set aside all Your riches above
To pay our redemption in full!
