Brook from the Book

"The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.... The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.... Death and life are in the power of the tongue" (Proverbs 18:4,15,21).

Submerged beneath the flowing brook
Of the words the wise have said
The Bible, God's inspired Book,
Is our wisdom's Fountainhead.

The prudent heart will always thirst,
Discerning ears will always seek,
For wisdom from the Bible first,
Supplying fitting words to speak.

Death and life are in the power
Of the tongue that will persuade.
Every day and every hour
Are eternal choices made.

Thus we see the urgent cause
To speak a fitting word in season:
Life and death should give us pause
To pray and preach with fervent reason.
