Demise of Demas

"It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man" (Psalm 118:8).  "He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house" (Proverbs 15:27).  "Cursed be the man that trusteth in man... whose heart departeth from the LORD... Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD... I the LORD search the heart" (Jeremiah 17:5-10).  "Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world" (2 Timothy 4:10).

In God alone we rightly trust;
We dare trust in mortal man
Whose strength declines and turns to dust,
Abandoning his noblest plan.

The Lord, who searches every heart,
Could see the greed that was unfurled
In Demas who would soon depart
Because he loved this present world.

The one who trusts in man is cursed;
The one who trusts in God is blest.
The Lord will satisfy the thirst
Of all who come to Him for rest.

O Lord, we see the sad demise
Of Demas, who had turned away.
Reprove us, that we may be wise,
Lest we should also go astray!
