Fearful Favor

"I entreated Thy favor with my whole heart... I am a companion of all them that fear Thee" (Psalm 119:58,63).  "Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.  For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off" (Proverbs 23:17,18).  "Ye have not hearkened unto Me, saith the LORD... to your own hurt" (Jeremiah 25:7).  "Let us therefore fear... that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need" (Hebrews 4:1,16).

There is a fear that God commends
Which moves our hearts to seek His favor
And draws us closer to the friends
Who likewise love and trust our Savior.

Let not your heart be envious
Of sinners in prosperity.
What good is being prosperous,
Yet lost for all eternity?

As we perceive what hurts the soul,
We find the beneficial fear
That trusts in God who makes us whole
As He has thereby drawn us near.

O Lord, we thank You for Your Word
That shows us what is right and wrong
As we obey what we have heard
With fearful favor all day long.
