Dealing with our Dullness

"Thou hast dealt well with Thy servant, O LORD, according unto Thy Word... Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept Thy Word" (Psalm 119:65-67).  "A just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again" (Proverbs 24:16).  "All the words that I command thee... speak unto them; diminish not a word" (Jeremiah 26:19).  "We have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing" (Hebrews 5:11).

The Lord has dealt with us so well
With love according to His Word
That lifted us each time we fell,
Correcting us when this occurred.

Our Savior knows our tendency
To hear His Word, and then diminish
Its relevance selectively
And leave undone what we should finish.

The Word of God is not unclear
Regarding what we ought to do;
It is the dullness of our ear
That makes us slow to follow through.

O Lord, we thank You for the fullness
Of Your instruction every day
And for Your dealing with our dullness
When we're inclined to go astray.
