Dayspring in our Darkness

"Through the tender mercy of our God... the Dayspring from on high hath visited us, to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace" (Luke 1:78,79).

How great the tender mercy is
Of Christ our Dayspring from on high
Who shows the proof that we are His
With marks of love that testify.

Behold His hands, His feet, and side
And wonder at the mystery
That Christ our Lord was crucified
To ransom us eternally.

His light has shined upon our path
Where once we waited for the grave
To swallow us in endless wrath,
But then our Dayspring came to save!

He broke the bars that held us in
When He had purchased our release.
He washed away our stain of sin
And led us in the way of peace.

O Lord, we thank You for such love
With mercies infinite and tender
By which You left Your throne above
To be our Dayspring and Defender.

Lord, help us use the moments well
To shine Your light where we are sent,
As You deliver souls from hell
Who hear the Gospel and repent.

O Dayspring in our darkness here,
How wondrous is redemption's story!
You gave Your life to draw us near,
And we delight to give You glory!
