Missing the Mountain

“The angels hastened Lot, saying… Escape for thy life; look NOT behind thee, NEITHER stay thou in all the plain; escape to the MOUNTAIN, lest thou be consumed.  And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord… I cannot escape to the mountain… behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither… And He said unto him… Haste thee, escape thither” (Genesis 19:15-22).  “There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the MOUNTAINS; the fruit thereof… shall flourish like grass of the earth… Let the whole earth be filled with His glory” (Psalm 72:16-19).  “Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil” (Proverbs 4:27).  “Our Lord Jesus Christ… gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world” (Galatians 1:3,4).

The lessons we can learn from Lot
Will spare our souls from needless pain
As we avoid his train of thought
Who missed the mountain for the plain.

Forgetting things that are behind,
We lift our eyes now to the mountain,
For in the plain we only find
A thirsty land without a fountain.

The Scriptures say that Lot was saved,
And yet his soul by sin was vexed,
But as we see how he behaved,
We must conclude he was perplexed.

The Lord has given this account,
Preserved in Scripture for our good,
That calls us upward to the mount
To heed God’s counsel as we should.

We’re called up to the mountaintops,
So let us rise and haste to go
To worship Christ Who never stops
To care for all His own below.

We thus receive the strength we need
Upon the mountain of God’s grace,
And there He will supply us seed
To sow the Gospel in this place.

Turn neither to the left nor right
In paths of boasting or depression:
On eagle’s wings of prayer take flight
To mountains where God gives His lesson.

We hear Your voice, Lord Jesus Christ,
Which calls us daily to begin
Recalling You were sacrificed
To thus deliver us from sin.

O Lord, from strength to strength we rise,
As thus You teach us to ascend
To mountains far above the lies
To truth on which we can depend.

Lord, thank You for Your matchless love
With daily mercies that are new!
Upon on these mountaintops above
We see things from Your point of view.
