Defeating the Darkness

“They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course” (Psalm 82:5).  “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death… The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death” (Proverbs 14:12,32).  “We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against… the rulers of the darkness of this world (Ephesians 6:12).

There is a consequence at last
For those will refuse learn.
They walk in darkness till they’re passed
The point of death with no return.

There is a darkness in the land
That swallows those who walk therein
Who will not choose to understand
The Gospel that reproves their sin.

Though they affirm that they are right,
The darkness grows upon their path.
They love the darkness more than light;
They spurn God’s truth and mock His wrath.

There’s surely more than meets the eye
As sinners march in step like cattle
In hopelessness until they die
As prisoners of war in battle.

And yet this battle has a Winner
Who fought our fight at Calvary!
He tasted death for every sinner
And saves our souls eternally!

This war of darkness in our world
Is not against mere flesh and blood,
Which rages until souls are hurled
Away from God as in a flood.

O Lord, we know that You defeated
The darkest forces on the cross.
Your work that saves is now completed
That rescues us from endless loss!

Lord, grant us wisdom as we speak
To those awaiting condemnation,
So by Your Gospel they may seek
And trust You for Your great salvation.

Until You come again, O Lord,
We stand, with armor that You give,
Against the darkness with Your sword,
Which is Your Word by which we live.
