Heavenly Hope

"What is man, that Thou shouldest… set Thine heart upon him?" (Job 7:17).  "I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy… Hope in God: for I shall yet praise Him" (Psalm 43:4,5).  "Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life" (Proverbs 13:12).  "Master, carest Thou not that we perish?  He… said unto the sea, Peace, be still.  And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.  And He said unto them, Why are ye so fearful?  How is it that ye have no faith?" (Mark 4:38-40). 

Our heavenly hope is in Christ

Who died for the souls He would save.   

For us was our Lord sacrificed,

Who rose (as He said) from the grave! 

We go to the altar of God:

A cup there is filled to the brim

With wrath from our Lord's judgment rod;

Behold there our sins laid on Him!

Our hope in the Lord is assured;

He saved us from infinite loss!  

Though all other hopes be deferred,

Our peace was procured on the cross. 

Our heavenly hope would have perished;    

The storm would have swallowed us up,  

O Lord, if we were not so cherished

That You drank our judgment-filled cup!
