Lot's Littleness

"Escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.  And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord... I cannot escape to the mountain... This city is near, and it is a little one... Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar (Heb. "little" צֹעַר tso'ar) (Genesis 19:17-22).  "Thy Word is... a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105).  "The eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth" (Proverbs 17:24).  "For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit" (Romans 8:5).

The charge to Lot was surely clear:
The mountain was the place to run,
But Lot preferred the city near;
Besides, it was a little one.

The Lord who saved our souls from wrath
Commands us now from sin to flee.
His Word now shines upon our path,
And by His truth He makes us free.

Consider well Lot's foolish choice
To set aside God's wiser call:
Unwilling then to heed God's voice,
His habitation would be small.

O Lord, the things that Lot esteemed
Were little (which he thought were large).
May we who are by blood redeemed
Obey Your Spirit's greater charge!
