Imagination vs. Immortal

"Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?  The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his Anointed" (Psalm 2:1,2).  "There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand" (Proverbs 19:21).  "O righteous Father, the world hath not known Thee" (John 17:25).

Imaginations rage in vain
Against the Lord and His Anointed!
Shall not we deem God's foes insane
Whose self-demise is thus appointed?

How foolishly do hearts devise
A strategy so vainly planned
Against the Lord, who is all-wise,
Whose counsel in the end shall stand!

Why is it, then, that the nations rage,
Imagining such foolish things?
What causes blindness in our age
Which yet ignores the King of kings?

The Lord can surely see the cause
That people will not see things right,
For those who hate His moral laws
Will love the darkness more than light.

Our God is righteous; we are not,
Yet even so our Lord was sent
To bring us pardon which He bought
And freely gives when we repent.

Immortal God, our Lord and Savior,
Your call to all humanity
Extends to all Your saving favor
Who turn to You from vanity.

We take the Gospel of salvation,
O Lord, to those who yet will hear it,
Who turn from vain imagination,
Obeying Your immortal Spirit.
