Heaven's Hen

"He sent redemption unto His people" (Psalm 111:9).  "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!" (Matthew 23:37).

The Lord of heaven sent redemption
When Christ became our Hiding Place.
His Law condemned, without exemption,
Our souls apart from saving grace.

How tenderly He came to us:
The mighty God became a Man!
How merciful and marvelous
Was heaven's great redemption plan!

A Child was born in Bethlehem;
A Son was given to us then.
Jerusalem!  Jerusalem!
He came to you as heaven's Hen!

How mighty is the King of kings,
The Lord of lords, the great I Am!
Yet as a Hen, He spread His wings,
And He became God's holy Lamb!

How costly was redemption's price,
O Lord, extended by Your love
When You became our Sacrifice
And our Redeemer from above!

We thank You, Lord, the work is done,
Fulfilling what the prophets said,
Inviting all who yet will run
Beneath Your wings which You have spread.

Lord, help us rightly to portray
Yourself as heaven's Hen that came,
So sinners now will not delay
To find their Refuge in Your name.
