David's Discernment

"The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit Thou at My right hand, until I make Thine enemies Thy footstool... The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a Priest forever after the order of Melchizedek" (Psalm 110:1,4).  "While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying, What think ye of Christ?  Whose Son is He?  They say unto Him, The Son of David.  He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call Him Lord, saying, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit Thou on My right hand, till I make Thine enemies Thy footstool?  If David then call Him Lord, how is He his son?  And no man was able to answer Him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask Him any more questions" (Matthew 22:41-46).

We hear the Father's conversation
With Christ who comes to take His seat,
Exalted to the highest station
With all His foes beneath His feet.

Though Christ would come from David's line,
From everlasting, He was God.
He never ceased to be Divine;
His holiness was never flawed.

Yes, David rightly understood
That Christ was very God indeed,
Yet as our great High Priest He would
Come forth as David's royal Seed.

When Jesus asked for a conclusion
Regarding Christ:  "Whose Son is He?"
He thus exposed the great confusion
Of every wicked Pharisee.

For David worshiped Christ the Lord,
Affirming that no name was greater.
He saw what Pharisees ignored:
Christ was his Son, yet His Creator!

He saw the day when enemies
Opposing Christ would come to naught.
No wonder then those Pharisees
Were rendered speechless at this thought!

O Lord, we thank You for Your favor
To sinners who deserved Your wrath!
You came to earth to be our Savior
And turn us from destruction's path.

As David, Lord, we have discerned
Your Word foretold so long ago,
That Your salvation would be spurned
By those who chose to be Your foe.

Discernment, Lord, which David found,
Is still imparted by Your Spirit.
So may Your truth that saves abound
To those who yet will humbly hear it.
