Whatever He Wills

“Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did He in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places” (Psalm 135:6).  “The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: He turneth it whithersoever He will… as for the upright, He directeth his way” (Proverbs 21:1,29).  “And there shall come forth a Rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots… There shall be a Root of Jesse… to it shall the Gentiles seek: and His rest shall be glorious” (Isaiah 11:1-10).  “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ” (Galatians 3:13,14).

In heaven, in earth, and the depths of the seas,
Beyond what the limited eye of man traces,
Whatever the Lord in His wisdom would please,
He did in highest and deepest of places.

Whatever the Lord had determined was right,
Though pharaohs and kings were resisting Him still,
He did on the stage of this earth in plain sight,
As He turned their hearts to accomplish His will.

Yet God has been calling upon sinful man
To hear His command and to wisely obey.
The upright are guided to follow God’s plan,
Yet others decide they will go their own way.

The problem is greater than human volition,
For we all have sinned, and our sin must condemn.
Yet Christ came to save us from endless perdition,
As Jesse’s Descendent, a Rod from his stem.

Though He was from Jesse a Branch and a Rod,
He was his Creator and therefore his Root.
All those who will seek Him and thus turn to God
Find glorious rest in His salvation’s fruit!

Now Christ has redeemed us who once had been cursed,
Becoming a Curse on the cross in our stead!
The curse of the Law by His grace is reversed,
Confirmed when in triumph He rose from the dead!

O Lord, we’re astonished at what You have done
To rescue our souls from a horrible grave!
You found no one righteous, no, not even one,
For whom You would lay down Your own life to save!

We thank you, O Lord, for Your marvelous love
That made You determine to pay such a cost!
Now send us show why You came from above,
Since You are not willing that any be lost.
