Rod upon the Rock

"And the people thirsted for water.... And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people?.... And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go. Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb, and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink" (Exodus 17:3-6).

The people in the desert cried
And turned to Moses to complain.
Their thirst had not been satisfied.
The land was dry; there was no rain.

Then Moses therefore cried to God
And rightly asked, "What shall I do?"
The Lord then said to take his rod,
And bring the elders with him too.

"Behold," the Lord said, "I will stand
Before thee there upon the rock."
Then "smite the rock," was His command,
To bring forth water for His flock.

There is a portrait here we find
That clearly shows us Jesus Christ
Because our Lord was so inclined
To pour His life out, sacrificed.

God's judgment rod upon Him fell,
Because He took the sinner's place.
That He might rescue us from hell
And satisfy us with His grace.

O Lord, we stand in grateful awe
That You would bless us, who were cursed,
By satisfying thus Your law,
And satisfying too, our thirst!
