Sliding into Sleep

"Take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth.... I will speak of Thy testimonies before kings, and will not be ashamed" (Psalm 119:43,46). "Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep; so shall thy poverty come" (Proverbs 24:33, 34). "Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship, and he lay, and was fast asleep. So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? Call upon God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not" (Jonah 1:5,6).

Is this a time to fold our hands
And slide into a careless sleep?
Should not we heed our Lord's commands
To sow with tears and thereby reap?

Are we content with poverty
That folded hands will surely bring?
Are we indifferent as we see
Eternal souls are perishing?

Are we like Jonah in the ship
Who by his shipmate was reproved?
Will we in slumber further slip
Until our witness is removed?

O Lord, revive our hearts again
So that we may not be ashamed
To preach the Gospel to all men,
That souls for Christ may thus be claimed!
