Medicine of Mercy

"O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise Him, all ye people. For His merciful kindness is great toward us, and the truth of the LORD endureth forever. Praise ye the LORD" (Psalm 117:1,2). "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine, but a broken spirit drieth the bones" (Proverbs 17:22). "Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Ghost" (Romans 15:13).

The medicine that heals our hearts
And makes us truly merry too
Is in the mercy God imparts
With His assurance it is true.

No pharmacy upon its shelves
This medicine shall ever carry,
Nor shall we find within ourselves
The remedy that makes us merry.

The medicine that makes us whole
Was purchased for us when Christ died,
When Mercy ransomed us in full
And Truth was fully satisfied.

Our joy, therefore, should not depend
On circumstances going well,
But on the Lord, our dearest Friend,
Who died to save our souls from hell.

O Lord, we thank You for the peace
And for the joy Your Spirit gives.
Though trials sometimes will increase,
Our Source of joy forever lives.

So help us, Lord, when sorrows come,
To fix on You our steadfast gaze,
Recalling where our joy flows from
With hope and healing in Your praise.
