Leaning on His Love

"I am my Beloved's, and His desire is toward me.... Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her Beloved?.... Set me as a seal upon Thine heart, as a seal upon Thine arm: for love is as strong as death... the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would be utterly contemned" (Song of Solomon 7:10, 8:5-7).

How hopeless would our prospect be
If we depended on our love!
Salvation rests entirely
On our Lord Jesus Christ above.

The love that never could be drowned
Beneath our judgment's crashing waves,
Belongs to Christ who sought and found
And keeps each sinner that He saves.

The love of Christ cannot be quenched;
It is a most vehement flame!
Beneath those billows He was drenched,
And yet His love endured the same.

We're learning through this wilderness
To lean alone on Jesus Christ;
It is His grace, and nothing less,
From strength to strength that has sufficed.

We thank You, Lord, for love so great
We know we never could repay,
Yet we would learn to demonstrate
Our grateful love to You each day.
