Summer Season

"And Elisha said unto him.... Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants?" (2 Kings 5:25,26). "He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame" (Proverbs 10:5).

There is a time when we should sleep,
A time as well when we should rise,
A time to sow, a time to reap
When harvest gathering is wise.

In Israel, when summer came,
Beginning at the Pentecost,
It surely then was counted shame
For sons to sleep as crops were lost.

Is it a time for things so small
That waste our time and energy,
Displacing thus the greater call
For reaping souls eternally?

The summer season soon shall wane,
Symbolic of the harvest time.
A life absorbed with self is vain;
A life that's lived for God, sublime.

O Lord, You've said to lift our eyes
And look upon the harvest fields.
Revive in us a heart that's wise
To reap the joy obedience yields.
