He Humbled Himself

"O praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him all ye people. For His merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth forever. Praise ye the Lord" (Psalm 117:1,2). "He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:9-11).

He humbled Himself: now what does that mean?
How can we know what that meant for our Lord?
Can we comprehend that spectacular scene
When He was by angels in heaven adored?

He humbled Himself! He set it aside!
He came down to earth in the likeness of man.
For us He would suffer and be crucified:
If we would be saved, there was no other plan.

He humbled Himself! We scarcely begin
To ponder that distance when He stooped so low!
That we might be rescued and ransomed from sin,
Even to death on the cross He would go!

He humbled Himself, but God has now raised
His name above all other names for His worth!
How rightly the name of our Savior is praised
And worshipped in heaven and nations on earth!
