"He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool" (Proverbs 28:25).
There is an object of our trust
That renders us a fool:
Our own deceitful heart of lust
That seeks to have its rule.
Foolish faith! How many times
We learn it and bemoan
Our folly when our own will climbs
To sit on our heart's throne.
That throne belongs to Jesus Christ,
And rightly so it is!
He bought it when He sacrificed
Himself to make us His.
Oh rid us, Lord, of foolishness
And confidence in dust,
As we find all our righteousness
In Jesus, whom we trust.
