Handful in the Harvest

"There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon... let the whole earth be filled with his glory" (Psalm 72:16-19).  "He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame" (Proverbs 10:5).  "After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues... cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb" (Revelation 7:9,10).

A handful of disciples came
Upon the day of Pentecost
To preach the Gospel we proclaim:
Christ came to earth to save the lost!

Let all the earth be told the story
Of how our Savior died for us,
Who rose triumphant in His glory
And shall return victorious!

Let all those with an ear to hear
Consider well God's great salvation:
The day of death is drawing near
Which settles then our destination.

The harvest time shall soon be past;
The time to gather souls is now!
The promised day shall come at last
When every knee to Christ shall bow.

Until that day we preach the Word
To souls who stray like wayward sheep.
Let those repent who thus have heard,
And let us not in harvest sleep.

The multitude now grows above
Around the throne of Jesus Christ
To praise and thank Him for His love
Which moved Him to be sacrificed.

We hear the joyful chorus swell:
"Salvation to our God" they sing
To Him who saved our souls from hell,
The Lamb of God, our gracious King!

O Lord, behold the handful grown
That fills the heavens with Your praise!
Until You gather all Your own,
We labor in these harvest days.

Lord, let the handful of those seeds,
Which in Your harvest once began,
Now flourish where Your Spirit leads
To show the lost Your Gospel's plan.
