Gospel of God's Goodness

“Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man?  The goodness of God endureth continually… I trust in the mercy of God forever and ever” (Psalm 52:1,8).  There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD” (Proverbs 21:30).  “For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and His ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil… Be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:12,15).

The mighty man may boast with glee
To see his mischief which increases,
But God is good eternally,
And thus His goodness never ceases.

We trust the mercy of our God
Forevermore, and with good reason:
When evil triumphs, men applaud
For just a momentary season.

There is no wisdom that succeeds,
Nor understanding that prevails,
Nor evil counsel that impedes
The plan of God that never fails.

The eyes of God are on His own;
His ears are open to their prayers.
All evil shall be overthrown
But Christ for us a place prepares.

Be ready always, for we must
So answer all with confidence
Who ask the reason why we trust
The Lord, who is our soul’s Defense.

O Lord, both now and evermore
We know Your goodness cannot cease.
In spite of wickedness and war,
We find in You unchanging peace.

Lord, with Your Gospel we are sent
To show the goodness You have wrought
Which saves the sinners who repent,
And yet will judge them who will not.
