Trying our Treasure

"The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts… Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?" (Proverbs 17:3,16).  "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.  And why call ye Me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?" (Luke 6:45,46).

The furnace will refine the gold,
And by its flame the dross departs.
So likewise does the Lord behold
And try the treasure of our hearts.

The Lord reproves the vain request
For wisdom that is not sincere.
His eyes behold and surely test
The treasure that the heart holds dear.

God sees the treasure in the heart
That He refines and  will commend.
He warns the sinner to depart
From wrath approaching in the end.

O Lord, examine us within
And purge from us the sinful dross
Of insincerity and sin
That hide the treasure of Your cross!
