Expectations Examined

“My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth…. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: He shall preserve thy soul” (Psalm 121:2,7).  “When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth” (Proverbs 11:7).  “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God... We know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is” (1 John 3:1,2).

The outcome of our expectation
Is resting on our Lord and Savior,
The awesome Maker of creation
Who will preserve us by His favor.

We have eternal confidence
Because He gave to us His Word.
The Lord Himself is our Defense,
So we may rightly rest assured.

The soul who will not know the Lord
Has expectations which shall perish
Since he has wilfully ignored
The truth of God that he should cherish.

It is the truth that makes us free,
Which we have found in Jesus Christ.
He saves our souls eternally
Since He for us was sacrificed.

The contrast here in these extremes
Is surely more than we can say
Between the souls that Christ redeems
And those who turn the Lord away.

For Christ delivered us from wrath
With greater love than we can tell.
He is the Way, the single Path
That saves eternal souls from hell!

Behold the manner of His love
Who sent our Savior to the earth:
The Father sent Him from above
To offer us a second birth!

How great our expectation is,
For we shall see Him face to face!
Since He is ours and we are His,
We shall be like Him by His grace!

O Lord, we see the great confusion
Of those who blindly walk along
Who then must face the sad conclusion
With expectations that were wrong.

Lord, thank You for Your Gospel sent
With expectations that are true!
We pray for souls who will repent
And find their hope alone in You.
