Rescuer and Refuge

“If it had not been the LORD who was on our side… then the proud waters had gone over our soul… Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.  Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth” (Psalm 124:2-8).  “In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and His children shall have a place of refuge.  The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death” (Proverbs 14:26,27).

Through Christ alone our rescue came;
He bore the judgment of our sin!
He is the Hiding Place from shame,
The Refuge we are sheltered in.

We have escaped the deadly snare,
But not by efforts of our own:
Our Rescuer and our Refuge there
Was Jesus Christ our Lord alone!

As prophets long before had spoken
And sacrifices had portrayed,
By Christ our fetters would be broken
And all our ransom would be paid!

His work was awesome as Creator,
Yet so much more as our Defense,
Since our redemption was much greater,
For His own life was the expense!

If not for Christ who fought our strife,
How awful would our prospect be!
If He had not laid down His life,
We would be lost eternally!

O Lord, we thank You that You taught
Our hearts to fear and seek Your face
And find in You our Savior sought
As You became our Hiding Place!

Lord, teach us how to win lost
By teaching them to fear as well,
To show them why You paid the cost
To rescue precious souls from hell.

We thank You, Lord, for wondrous love
Which prompted You to rescue us!
How sweet our Refuge is above,
Procured by grace so marvelous!
