Gracious Greatness

“But I say unto you, That in this place is One greater than the temple… and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here… and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here” (Matthew 12:6,41,42).

We see these figures from the past,
The temple, Jonah, Solomon,
Were merely shadows that were cast
To show the greatness of God’s Son.

A greater than the temple came
Foreseen in offerings sacrificed:
Behold the Lamb who bore our shame!
Behold our Savior Jesus Christ!

A greater One we clearly see
Than Jonah rising from the whale:
Our Savior rose in victory:
The grave and death could not prevail!

A greater One now fills our eyes
Than Solomon who was renowned:
Behold our Lord, supremely wise,
Above all other names is crowned!

Behold our Savior and Creator
Fulfilled these types which were foreshown,
Yet He is infinitely greater,
Who saves us by His grace alone.

What gracious greatness here, O Lord,
Is seen in all these types portrayed,
And yet how little we’ve explored
Of Your magnificence displayed!

Lord Jesus Christ, our God and Savior,
Mere shadows never could compete
Or show the fullness of Your favor
Presenting us in You complete.

We thank You, Lord, for these reflections
Which graciously bring to our view
The shadows of Your great perfections
That call our hearts to worship You.
