Guiltless Garment

“Like a garment… shalt Thou change them, and they shall be changed” (Psalm 102:26).  “By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil” (Proverbs 16:6).  “When the King came in to see the guests, He saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:  and He saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless… and cast… into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 22:11-13).

Just like a garment, God shall change
All things regarding His creation.
How perfectly He shall arrange
The new things of that dispensation!

Yet as a garment, even now,
We’re covered with Christ’s righteousness.
His truth and mercy thus endow
His purging so that He may bless.

But many yet are unaware
That, without Christ, sin isn’t purged,
And others simply do not care,
Indifferent when this truth is urged.

Alas, the sinner cannot claim
That God has never made this known:
Apart from Christ there’s only shame;
Our righteousness is His alone.

This warning comes by Jesus Christ
Who knocks that He may enter in,
For He alone was sacrificed
To clothe us and to purge our sin.

Since God extends to us such grace,
There’s no excuse to now neglect
His guiltless garment to replace
Our filthy rags He must reject.

Lord, thank You for Your great provision
Of righteousness like Yours above
Because You made the hard decision
To purge our sins, constrained by love!

That guiltless garment, Lord, was Yours,
But You wore our iniquity!
Now clothed as Your ambassadors,
We’d preach Your Gospel faithfully.
