Counsel's Consequence

“Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.  There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand... Cease, My son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.  An ungodly witness scorneth judgment… Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools” (Proverbs 19:20-29).  “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal” (Matthew 25:46).

We ought to consider the consequence well
Of counsel, in view of the difference it makes:
When one leads to heaven, the other to hell,
How great is the cost, and how high are the stakes!

Beware of the counsel and scorning and fools
Who mock at the prospect of judgment by God.
The wisdom of God is the counsel that rules
And governs the nations at last with His rod.

Consider the counsel that always is right:
There’s only one standing like that in the end!
The Lord by His prophets has brought this to light:
It’s found in the Gospel that we now commend.

Now ponder the counsel God sent from above
By sending our Savior to die in our place:
Though many to continue to spurn His great love,
God beckons the sinner to come NOW by grace.

There’s two roads to choose and two consequences:
Eternity soon shall be closing the door.
TODAY is the day souls are called to their senses!
Who knows what TOMORROW is holding in store?

O Lord, we give thanks for the Gospel that reaches
To souls who are lost and are drowning in sin!
We show them the counsel from Your heart that teaches
That if they will open their door, You’ll come in.

We praise You, O Lord, for Your counsel of peace
That called us to trust You and be born again!
O help us persuade other souls to now cease
From hearing instruction from ungodly men.
