Contingency of Continuance

“Ye shall not add unto the Word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you” (Deuteronomy 4:2).  “My son, keep thy Father’s commandment…. When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee” (Proverbs 6:20,22).  “Then said Jesus… If ye continue in My Word, then are ye My disciples indeed, and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31,32).

The Lord is faithful every day,
And every word of God is true.
We dare not take one word away,
Or add a single word thereto.

There is a clear contingency
In God’s command that we have heard:
We’ll know the truth that makes us free
If we continue in His Word.

His Word shall lead us when we walk;
His Word shall keep us when we sleep;
When we awake, His Word shall talk,
For thus He guides and guards His sheep.

If we’re His sheep, it shall be known
By our continuance today.
HIS faithfulness, and NOT our own,
Restores us when we go astray.

O Lord, we thank You that we rest
Upon Your Word of truth and grace
By which we’re saved, by which we’re blest,
By which we know Your love’s embrace.
