Extending His Excellence

“How excellent is Thy lovingkindness, O God!  Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Thy wings… Thou shalt make them drink of the river of Thy pleasures.  For with Thee is the fountain of life: in Thy light shall we see light” (Psalm 36:7-9).  “A Friend loveth at all times, and a Brother is born for adversity” (Proverbs 17:17).  “The Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).

How kindly does the Lord extend
The shadow of His gracious wings
Upon His children who depend
On His salvation that He brings.

How excellent are all His treasures,
Above all we may ask or think,
Extended in His river's pleasures,
As whosoever will may drink.

The fountain of His life now flows
To everyone who is athirst.
Our Savior suffered, died, and rose
Because He freely loved us first.

Our Savior now extends His light;
It shines upon salvation’s path.
His Word illumines what is right
And bids the lost to flee from wrath.

Now in His light our hearts rejoice
To see His mercy thus extended,
Astounded that He made the choice
To die for sinners He befriended!

As Man, the Lord became the Kin
Of all those He would thus redeem.
The Lamb of God removed our sin
With love beyond what we could dream!

A Friend who loves us all the time!
A Brother born to bear our strife!
His love extended is sublime:
Our Savior freely gave His life!

Our Savior fully weighed the price;
He surely knew what it would cost.
Our ransom was His sacrifice:
He laid His life down for the lost.

O Lord, Your love to us extends
Beyond our comprehension’s scope!
Your lovingkindness never ends
On which we safely hang our hope!

O Lord, You suffered so much loss
To thus extend eternal gain!
Your excellence upon the cross
Makes every earthly glory vain!

We show the lost Your excellence
Extended, Lord, in what You did,
So they may flee to Your defense
And in Your Hiding Place be hid.
