Meet to be Merry

“To him that ordereth his conversation aright will I show the salvation of God” (Psalm 50:23).  “I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance… Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth… It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found” (Luke 15:7,10,32).

There’s certainly more than is meeting our eyes
In view of one sinner receiving salvation.
Our Lord pulls the curtain, and to our surprise,
In heaven above there is great jubilation!

It’s meet to be merry!  It’s right to rejoice,
Since that is how heaven above has behaved.
It’s not just that someone has made a right choice,
But that such a sinner, once lost, is now saved!

We ought to consider such joy in this light:
Our Savior rejoices since He paid the cost
To ransom the sinner, and He fought the fight,
So those who were perishing may not be lost.

How weak is our joy, and our vision is dim;
As heaven rejoices our hearing is dull,
For heaven reflects the rejoicing of Him
Who laid down His life for the perishing soul.

The prodigal son that our Savior portrayed
Was met by his father’s rejoicing and love.
Are we like the brother, with no love displayed,
Or do we reflect heaven’s gladness above?

O Lord, we give thanks that You loved us so much,
That all of our sins on Your cross You would carry!
You came to save sinners, and since we are such
Now saved by Your grace, it is meet to be merry!
