Readiness to Reason

“Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God” (Job 13:3).  “Paul… reasoned with them out of the Scriptures… They received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so… [God] commandeth all men everywhere to repent:  because He hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that Man whom He hath ordained; whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead” (Acts 17:2-31).

Our God will grant an audience
To all who are sincere.
He bids us come with confidence,
And humbly to draw near.

Almighty God extends the right
To draw near to His throne
To all seek Him in the light
Of what He has made known.

God reasons with His Word inspired
That He may clearly show
The wisdom that we have desired,
Which by His truth we know.

We’re called to thus prepare our mind;
He bids us come and see,
For all who seek the Lord shall find
The truth that makes them free.

The Lord appoints to us season
To seek Him while we may,
And those who are prepared to reason
Are ready to obey.

We do not reason with our God
To win an argument,
For He is perfect!  We are flawed!
We’re taught to thus repent.

We reason too, to thus know how
To give a clear defense,
To anyone who asks us now
Why trusting God makes sense.

Our God has surely given proof
Since Jesus Christ is risen,
Though scorners yet will stand aloof
And still refuse to listen.

We thank You, Lord, for wondrous grace
That gives the invitation
To come prepared to seek Your face
And find in You salvation.

Prepare us, Lord, with readiness
To show the reason well
That by Your grace alone You bless
And save our souls from hell.
