Preserving the Priority

“The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: He shall preserve thy soul” (Psalm 121:7).  “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love” (Revelation 2:4).

There is an evil far above
Our lack of doing things:
It is forsaking our first love
For Christ, the King of kings.

May God preserve us from this scourge
Of love that fades away!
O may He search and quickly purge
A heart too cold to pray!

We know that faith alone is dead
Without activity,
Yet we may work and not be led
By love’s priority.

O Lord, we hear Your admonition;
We hear Your promise too:
That You will cleanse our heart’s condition
As we confess to You.

We thank You for the countless reasons
For loving You, O Lord,
And for preserving us in seasons
When first love is restored.
