Heavy and Hard

“There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.  The ransom of a man's life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke… Good understanding giveth favor: but the way of transgressors is hard” (Proverbs 13:7,8,15).

A good understanding gives bountiful favor;
The transgressor’s way is both heavy and hard.
The Lord laid the load of our sins on the Savior,
Who suffered for us as His visage was marred.

How heavy the weight of our sins was on Christ!
How hard was that road as He carried the cross!
We find here our ransom!  No other sufficed
To spare us from wrath and eternity’s loss.

How great are the riches bestowed on His own,
Who see the earth’s riches as temporal dust!
The transgressor’s poverty, yet to be shown,
Is that there’s no ransom in things he will trust.

O Lord, we give thanks for the riches bestowed
On all who have trusted in Your saving grace!
We thank You for bearing our sin’s heavy load
And taking the hardness of wrath in our place!
