Analogy in Aaron

"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments" (Psalm 133:1,2).

Among the portraits we may see
In Scripture to Christ pointing,
Is the profound analogy
Of the high priest's anointing.

Our unity, the psalmist said,
Is like the precious ointment
That once anointed Aaron's head,
To manifest appointment.

Our God appointed that high priest,
By ointment signified,
And vain division, then at least,
Was clearly set aside.

Yet these are shadows that have passed
That point to Jesus Christ,
Who is our great High Priest at last,
For us once sacrificed!

So may our unity likewise
Be focused in our midst
As now on Jesus Christ our eyes
With one accord are fixed.
