Words and Worms

"The Word of the LORD is tried:  He is a Buckler to all those that trust in Him... Thou hast also given me the shield of Thy salvation" (Psalm 18:30,35).  "Hearken unto Me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of My mouth" (Proverbs 7:24).  "The fool walketh in darkness" (Ecclesiastes 2:14).  "Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration... He gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms... But the Word of God grew and multiplied" (Acts 12:21-24).

The Word of God is fully tried;
He shields those who in Him trust,
But fools in darkness walk in pride
And place their confidence in dust.

When Herod sat upon his throne,
He thought that he was in control,
But his mistake was clearly shown
In the departure of his soul.

The Lord, in no uncertain terms,
Is sovereign King of all creation,
As Herod, eaten then by worms,
Discovered during his oration.

The Lord who sent those worms that day,
Then caused His Word to multiply.
How clearly then did God display
That He is ruling from on high.

Lord, every knee to You shall bow
And every tongue shall soon confess
The truth we are proclaiming now:
In You we find our righteousness.

O Lord, we see the consequence
In choosing pride instead of grace.
There was for Herod no defense,
Since he refused Your hiding place.

The lesson, Lord, is very clear
Conveyed by words and worms You sent:
You save the humble who draw near,
But judge those who will not repent.
